DESIGN PREVIEW / 0.100

Heavy type for the front row.

Backline is a condensed block display font for music posters, album covers, event identities and bold web headings. Thick stems, rectangular counters and clipped corners give short titles a strong silhouette.

Clean or distressed?

Clean keeps the solid letterforms for headings at 48 px and above. Press adds fine vector scratches and ink wear for titles at 96 px and above. Both faces share widths and kerning, so switching them preserves your line lengths. Repeated letters repeat the same texture.

Make the A a star

A readable triangular-counter A is the default. Enable stylistic set 01 (ss01) for Star A in either face. On the web, use font-feature-settings: "ss01" 1. The alternate preserves the ordinary A’s width; it changes uppercase A only.

What you get

Clean and Press in TTF, OTF and WOFF2, a web CSS example, an offline specimen, editable UFO sources and SIL OFL 1.1. Each face contains 346 glyphs and 344 encoded characters: English letters, numbers, Latin-1, Latin Extended-A, selected punctuation and combining marks.

Use the right size

Clean: 48–320 px on screen or 36–240 pt in print. Press: 96–480 px or 72–360 pt. At small caption sizes, the narrow counters and distressed details lose clarity. Use another face for body copy, navigation and dense tables. No Hangul, Cyrillic or complete Greek coverage is included.

Compatibility and installation

Choose TTF or OTF for each face; avoid installing both formats of the same face. Select JFFF Backline or JFFF Backline Press. For CSS, set font-weight: 900 and font-synthesis: none. Font structure, accent composition, core spacing, browser loading and Windows GDI rendering have been checked. Word, Adobe and macOS document editing remain unverified.
